Those who survive a critical illness often suffer psychological consequences: In the first year after being discharged from an intensive care unit, around 20% of patients develop symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, psychotherapeutic services are often lacking, writes a team led by Prof. Dr. Jochen Gensichen, LMU Klinikum München. The researchers therefore developed a short version of narrative exposure therapy for the treatment of PTSD symptoms in primary care.
