Hufeland Lecture of the Primary Health Care Foundation

Once a year, the Foundation for General Medicine invites a distinguished figure to deliver the academic “Hufeland Lecture” on fundamental questions of medicine. This event serves to honor the life’s work of the invited speaker.

Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland (August 12, 1762 – August 25, 1836) was, during his time in Weimar, the personal physician to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich von Schiller, Johann Gottfried von Herder, and Christoph Martin Wieland. With these patients, Hufeland is believed to have discussed not only his immediate clinical duties, but also broader issues concerning health and illness.

In this tradition, the “Hufeland Lecture” seeks to inspire both physicians and patients of today to reflect on such questions.
