SMOOTH study

Structured long-term support for patients after sepsis [DRKS-ID: DRKS00000741]

The BMBF study developed and investigated a GP aftercare program for patients following severe sepsis. Patients were actively followed up by their GP after discharge from hospital.

The intervention group of 291 patients in 148 GP practices showed an improvement in motor function. The Smooth study (Sepsis survivors Monitoring and cOordination in OutpatienT Healthcare) drew international attention to the long-term consequences of sepsis. It showed initial approaches to improving treatment for these patients in GP practices and was published in JAMA in 2016.
