Geriatrics
Sarcopenia research group (Prof. Dr. med. Michael Drey, M.Sc.):
Main research focus is the pathophysiology and treatment of sarcopenia. Projects on national and international level are investigating the role of the neuromuscular junction and the corresponding motoneurons in the onset of sarcopenia. Additionally, endocrinological causes like the age-associated impairment of the somatotropic axis are under investigation. The relation between osteoporosis and sarcopenia is another research topic.
Research group in geriatrics (Univ. Prof. Dr. med. Michael Drey, M.Sc.)
The working group is scientifically concerned with four main areas. The main field of research is sarcopenia. The main aim is to increase our understanding of the pathophysiology of sarcopenia in order to expand the treatment options for sarcopenia. Osteoporosis is another area of research. Here we concentrate on research into the clinical aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis in very old people. Furthermore, the working group is attempting to explore the field of gerontoendocrinology. In this context, the general aim is to investigate the relationship between changes in hormone balance and ageing in general and the influence of these changes on specific age-related diseases. Finally, we also deal with general topics of geriatrics with the aim of optimizing the treatment of older patients.
