Tobacco Dependence
Tobacco dependence is a widespread addictive disorder that is often associated with considerable individual suffering as well as high overall community costs. Around 27% of all adults in Germany do smoke, many of them are highly addicted to tobacco. In about 90% of all men and 80% of all women effected by lung cancer, tobacco smoking is the causative reason. Moreover, smoking is related to numerous other illnesses such as cardiovascular diseases or renal cancer. Year by year around 58,000 people in Germany die due to smoking. Worldwide more than 7 million people die as a result of direct tobacco use.
Our goal is to gain knowledge to and contribute valuable research on actual topics related to smoking, tobacco addiction and dependency on nicotine. In our outpatient clinic we help people getting free of tobacco use based on up-to-date scientific data and different approaches such as personalized coaching or group therapy.
-
Retrain your Brain
- Multidisciplinary study of the Department of Clinical Psychology of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University and the Tobacco Outpatient Clinic of the University Hospital.
- A randomized-controlled, double-blinded study on the effectiveness of Cognitive Bias Modification as an add-on in smoking cessation.
- In this study, computer training will be provided in addition to the Smoke-Free Program to help you on the path to abstinence. We would like to investigate the effectiveness of these trainings.
Nicotide 2
- Video-assisted, 4-armed clinical study in ad libitum design to investigate different questions related to behavioural and nicotine-associated pharmacological aspects of tobacco heating devices (IQOS) compared to e-cigarettes (JUUL, myblu) and a tobacco cigarette (Marlboro Red)
Nicotide Heat
Clinical study to investigate the flow rate of nicotine in venous blood within the acute phase
3 products are to be compared by each participant (cross-over design): IQOS, Glo™, tobacco cigarette
Beside pharmacological data, subjective variables based on the questionnaire on smoking urges (QSU-G) are being investigated
NiQuiz
anonymous online questionnaire on consumption behavior of various nicotine products, motivation to use and subjective assessment of the likelihood of developing health effects
Nicotide Pouches
clinical study to investigate systemic nicotine uptake including the flow rate of nicotine in venous blood within the acute phase
4 products (3 nicotine pouches of different strengths + tobacco cigarette) are to be compared by every participant (cross-over design)
beside pharmacological data and cardiovascular parameters, subjective variables based on the questionnaire on smoking urges (QSU-G) are being investigated

Graduate psychiatry students, students with advanced level in related fields of addictive disorders and those who thrive for master/ doctoral thesis in medicine are welcome to apply for an (doctoral) internship within our team. We provide excellent experience in our clinical care and in research projects on addiction as well as a multidisciplinary, motivated and supportive team. You will have the opportunity to conduct and participate in a research internship project or if feasible discuss your own ideas for a potential project that fit your own scientific or doctoral needs. Furthermore, you will be given the chance to get an insight view and to take part in our daily clinical work. Internship and doctoral students are also encouraged and supported to write for international scientific journals in English (i.e., publishing their research project / master or doctoral thesis). For a doctoral thesis we prefer a cumulative dissertation.
National and international students are welcome to apply for an internship/ a dissertation – basic German language skills are a prerequisite due to interactions and contacts with patients in our clinic.
If you are interested in an internship or dissertation within our working group, you are welcome to hand in your informal application form including a CV: tabakambulanz@med.uni-muenchen.de .
